Classes and Workshops

Do you have a kid who LOVES stories?

Who geeks out over their shows or movies? Who can’t get enough of a book series? And will tell ANYONE who’ll listen about them? Who used to play for HOURS with their toys, making up characters out of anything they could get their hands on? Who’s so into their giant, complicated narratives that maybe you even have a hard time following them?

You may have a writer in the family.

This workshop is for them.

It’s for kids who are serious about writing. For kids who are already working on something extensive (a novel or collection of short stories) and want both help and companionship. This writing circle is designed as a space for these kids to work out their narratives inside an encouraging group of like-minded peers. The instructor will guide the conversation, to make sure it stays on track, as well as provide relevant handouts.

In this workshop, we will establish the four basic categories of story construction: character, plot, setting, and style. We will break each of these story categories into more refined parts and experiment with their structures.

The students will have some in-class writing time at the end of each session to brainstorm and work out all of the ideas that were discussed. They will share their work both by reading out loud and through email. Feedback from the instructor will be nurturing and interactive, not designed to tear down, but rather to provide a space that builds confidence. That builds friendships.

Tuesdays on Zoom. 4:30-6pm.

This class is through The Republic of Letters. To learn more and to sign up, please visit their website.

Every kid already has tremendous style, let’s nurture it and see what grows.
